    Thomas Stanton

Imagine a design competition like the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathalon, which works with multiple universities to develop designs for particular kinds of buildings in addition to houses. For example, a few types of buildings are large energy users, for example data centers, commercial greenhouses, and large indoor sports facilities (e.g. for hockey and ice skating sports; for tennis; for golf; for football/socker). Since there are hundreds of such buildings around the world, there could be great opportunities for high-efficiency designs and for making these into net-zero buildings.

    Please read more below . . .

    The Problem this Project Addresses

Many new buildings are excessively wasteful of resources and commit the owners and operators to decades of energy waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Identifying the new building techniques and making them part of the normal construction practices is a major challenge. By engaging multiple colleges and universities in team-competitions to work on particular building types, promising design principles and practices can be more rapidly incorporated into such buildings. That is especially relevant to universities themselves, which operate massive physical plants including multiple building types.
