  • Design Patterns for Sustainable Conservation Economies -- Great Lakes Region(s)

    Thomas Stanton

The "Conservation Economy" is a pattern language intended to describe fundamental principles and practices to guide people towards understanding all of the major factors needed to ensure community sustainability: See http [colon slash slash] www [dot] conservationeconomy [dot] net [slash] pattern_map [slash] noflash [slash]. The initial set of concepts was developed for the EcoTrust in the Pacific Northwest, so case studies and examples are focused on that region, its climate, and organizations working towards sustainability in that part of the country. This project will continue developing the Conservation Economy pattern language, while incorporating case studies and indexing organizations in the Great Lakes region or any other regions or sub-regions.

    The Problem this Project Addresses

As more communities begin to recognize the various ways that existing practices are unsustainable, individuals and organizations start to ask questions about what changes are needed to move towards continuous improvement and sustainability. The Conservation Economy pattern language provides an important, valuable set of ideas to help people understand the kinds of interventions that are needed, but the original work is highly focused on case studies and organizations from the Pacific Northwest. This project will work on continuing to expand the Conservation Economy pattern language by articulating additional fundamental principles and practices, and will develop additional sets of case studies and indexes of local and regional organizations that are working effectively towards sustainability.

An initial focus might be the Great Lakes Bioregion, but additional developments can focus on whatever regions are of most interest to volunteers or project funders.
